Just like your body, your mattress needs the right kind of support to perform at its best. Without proper support, a mattress is prone to sagging and premature wear, which means you won’t always get the comfortable sleep you need. When it comes to mattress support you have several options, starting with a traditional foundation.
A box spring—basically a wood box filled with coils—existed to add cushioning to the thin mattresses back in the day. Today’s mattresses are thicker and more comfortable than ever, so the support underneath them has taken on a different role. A foundation’s job now is to protect your mattress and raise it to a comfortable height.
Is a box spring or foundation necessary?
No, you don’t have to use a traditional foundation or box spring. Some people do throw their mattress on the floor and but don’t get the support they need. Instead, your mattress is more susceptible to dust, mold, and allergens it’s not recommended to sleep like this.
You do need a foundation if:
You’re using a standard metal bed frame or any bed that provides only a rim around the perimeter. Without a foundation, the mattress won’t have adequate support.
Your bed frame is set at a height that assumes a foundation. (The optimal height of a mattress is 25 inches off the floor.)
Your mattress warranty requires a specific type of foundation.
For the best aesthetics and performance, you can purchase your new mattress as a set with a matching foundation. But it’s fine to use your existing foundation as long as it’s less than five years old; it isn’t sagging, squeaking, or otherwise damaged. If you are keeping an existing foundation for a new queen or king size mattress, be sure it has adequate center support to avoid sagging in the future.
Siesta carries a large selection of solid hardwood and solid pine platform beds in all sizes and a variety of finishes.
Siesta’s platform beds are available with under the bed drawers or trundles
which can be placed on either side of the bed and have matching chests, dressers, mirrors, and nightstands.
All of our beds come with heavy duty slat systems eliminating the need for a box spring and only require the mattress. Platform beds offer a high level of support and help reduce mattress motion.
