How To Clean A Mattress

Mattresses, unfortunately, can be home to dust mites and bed bugs. Sweat, urine, and blood sometimes also find their way to get mixed in with mold and mildew in your bed. When it comes to mattress upkeep, people think they need to change the sheets or rotate the mattress from time to time. Mattresses are an essential investment, so you want to make sure they’re long-lasting. So here at Siesta Sleepworks, we are here to help you learn how to clean a mattress.

What Should I Do Daily, Weekly, and Monthly to Keep My Mattress Clean?

Invest in a mattress cover to protect it and add time in between cleanings. When purchasing a mattress cover, choose a washable cover that is easy to remove and replace on your mattress. Some covers are bed bug or dust-mite-proof. Wash your bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and comforters or duvet covers, weekly. Clean bedding will prevent the mattress cover from becoming soiled. Remove and wash the mattress cover regularly, and whenever there are any spills. Whenever you strip the bed, inspect the mattress for any stains and treat them. Use your vacuum cleaner and attach the upholstery attachment, vacuum, from the top of the mattress, then move your way down, paying attention to the overlapping and narrow paths. Repeat these steps on the entire mattress.

What Should I Do When Spills/ Stains Happen On My Mattress?

When a stain or spill happens on a mattress, immediately remove and wash your bedding and mattress cover. If the mattress surface has become soiled, use upholstery shampoo. Make sure you follow the directions correctly and use the upholstery shampoo to clean dirt or soil from the mattress surface. If you don’t have upholstery shampoo, you can mix mild dish soap with water until suds form. Apply the dry suds only to the stained area with a sponge. Wipe the area with a sponge of warm water. Try to avoid the interior padding of the mattress from getting wet. Make sure you allow the area to dry thoroughly. If you are in a warm climate, you can dry a mattress quickly outside. To speed up the drying process, use a fan, which will blow air across the mattress surface to make sure that it dries quickly.

What Will I Need To Use To Clean a Mattress?

  • A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
  • Upholstery shampoo
  • Mattress cover
  • Mild detergent/Dish Soap or Enzyme cleaner
  • Water
  • Sponges
  • Fan

Do I Need to Flip My Mattress?

In our grandparent’s days, it was the prevalent practice to flip a mattress every couple of months to help provide even wear. This was important if one person slept in the bed or if there was a significant size difference between partners sharing the bed. But modern beds now have one pillow top that makes flipping the mattress a lousy idea. We suggest that you check the manufacturer’s instructions. Some manufacturers might recommend rotating the bed.
