How to Know It’s Time for a New Mattress
When was the last time you replaced your mattress? Having an old, saggy, or damaged mattress can lead to poor sleep, back pain, and even breathing problems that make it difficult to sleep. Mattresses should be replaced every five to seven years, and they may need to be replaced sooner if they get a lot of wear and tear. If you experience any of these signs, it’s time for a new mattress:
Waking Up Sore
If you notice that your body is stiff when you wake up, or you have pain in your back, neck, or hips your mattress may be to blame. Mattresses break down over time, so if your mattress isn’t supporting you properly anymore because it’s starting to break down, you’ll feel it.
If you are feeling pressure on your hips, back, or knees when you’re in bed, or if you notice that your mattress has a visible sag or outline of your body and it doesn’t snap back to the original smooth surface when you get up, it’s time to get a new mattress.
Visible Signs of Wear
If you are noticing visible signs of wear and tear on your mattress, it should be replaced. Signs of wear include:
- Sagging
- Visible tears
- Ripping
- Holes
- Stains
- Other damage
Other signs of mattress damage you shouldn’t ignore include:
- Lumpy or deep indentations
- Foam that is failing or shifting around
- Springs that are poking you
- Feeling the foundation
Your Allergies or Asthma Is Worse
An old mattress can affect your breathing. Dust mite droppings left behind in your mattress can cause respiratory problems that can make your allergies or asthma worse. Even if you have a protective pad over your mattress, dust mites can be still cause respiratory issues. Bacteria, mold, and other allergens can also live in your mattress, especially if it’s old.
You’re Getting Hot
Overheating at night can be caused by your mattress. If you don’t normally run hot at night, and you haven’t had a problem with being too warm in the past, but you are too warm at night now it could be because your mattress is breaking down. As the foam and other materials in the mattress break down, they will restrict airflow on the surface of the mattress, which can trap body heat and make you feel warmer.
If you keep getting hot in bed or wake up sweating, your mattress might need to be replaced. If you didn’t have a problem with temperature regulation when you first bought the mattress, that’s a sure sign that your mattress is breaking down. The longer you have the mattress, the more the materials will soften and restrict airflow on the surface.
Trouble Sleeping
There are lots of things that can cause people to have trouble sleeping, including an old or broken-down mattress. Try sleeping in another bed or on the couch for a night. If you don’t have any trouble sleeping somewhere else, the problem is most likely your mattress. Once you replace it, you should be able to get the restful sleep you need to be healthy.
