How to Move Your Mattress on Your Own
Moving a mattress is no small job. Especially if you have a larger mattress, the thought of moving it on your own is daunting. Luckily, there are steps you can take to make a solo mattress move more successful and safer for yourself and the mattress.
Protect the Mattress
Before you move anything, protect your mattress. Moving the mattress without protection leaves it prone to getting dirty, stained, or damaged. Use large blankets to cover the mattress on all sides. You can secure the blankets to the mattress using straps or tape.
Fold the Mattress
If your mattress has springs, skip this step. Folding a mattress with springs is almost guaranteed to damage it. If your mattress doesn’t have spring, folding it is a great way to make the size more manageable for one person to handle. Fold the mattress width wise and secure with straps. Remember to unfold the mattress as soon as you’re done moving it to prevent damage.
Strengthen the Mattress
If your mattress can’t be folded, it can be strengthened! Use large pieces of cardboard to add some structure to a floppy mattress. Secure the cardboard to the side of the mattress where you sleep. This doubles as added protection during the move which is never a bad thing!
Making the Move
Once you’ve prepped the mattress, you need to prep yourself and the space for the move. Start by making a clear path from the mattress to your vehicle. Do not attempt strapping the mattress to the hood of a vehicle on your own. Instead, rent a Uhaul or other moving vehicle with an easy loading ramp.
Next, slide your mattress onto a dolly and strap it on. You can usually rent a dolly the same place you rent a moving vehicle. A dolly has wheels so you can tip the mattress back with the dolly and gently wheel it to your vehicle.
If you can’t get the mattress on a dolly, the next best option for solo movers is sliding the mattress. Place a blanket on the top and bottom of the mattress and start pulling. Make slow movements. If you have to lift it in some areas, lift from your knees to avoid an injury.
Get a New Mattress
It’s not reasonable to buy a new mattress every time you move, but if your move happens to coincide with you needing a new mattress that’s a big win! Mattresses should be replaced at least every 7 years. If you’re feeling restless or waking up sore, it’s a sign your mattress needs replaced. If you purchase a new mattress, it can be delivered directly to your new place and the old one can be removed from your old place by a junk removal crew for a small fee.
