Sleep is something that many of us wish we got more of, but the same old habits lead to night after night of bad sleep. Good sleep habits are referred to as sleep hygiene and unfortunately, it’s something that many people lack. Achieving good sleep hygiene is easier than you may think. Get a head start on your new, healthy sleep with these tips!
Setting a Routine
Create a routine of daily sleep and wake times. These times will be different for everyone, but as long as it’s something you can consistently stick too that’s all that matters. Sticking to a routine helps train your body to be tired at bedtime, allowing you to fall asleep easier. You’ll also get used to waking up around the same time each day and may even be able to do it without an alarm clock!
Upgrade Your Mattress
If your mattress is over 7 years old it needs replaced, but even if it isn’t, it still may be time for an upgrade. People often make the mistake of buying a mattress that they think should work for them without knowing what they really need. Go mattress shopping and spend at least 20 minutes test driving a mattress before you buy. Don’t pay attention to words like “medium-firm” as they’re listed on the tags because those terms have a different definition for everybody! Try out of a variety of mattresses and choose the one that you really love. Chronic back and neck pain and restlessness are all signs it’s time for a new mattress.
Avoid Electronics
Experts recommend avoiding the use of all electronic for 1 hour before bedtime. That include TV, tablets, cell phones, laptops, and more. Replace the habit of using electronics with a healthier, and sleepier, habit like reading a book. This also encourages you to only use your bed for sleep, rather than using it to answer work emails. When you bring outside stressors into your bed, it hinders your ability to sleep well.
